Gardener

Digging in the dirt,
Underneath the surface of the earth,
I learn where the roots go.
How they stage their battle plans—
this lust for land launched into
a territorial war.
I know where the roots go,
for I've met the worms that
feed them, and they have told me
their secrets.
Told me why they divide and conquer.
Told me of tunnels. Told me
life in darkness.
Told me life is simple. Life is
as complex as turning as winding
as patterns through roots.
Digging in the dirt,
underneath the surface of the earth.
